For Rev. Earl Hocker of New Zion Church in Depoy, the chance to have blacks and whites, men and women together in the same room was a great analogy for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Jan. 15.
“I remember when there was a time when black people could not go everywhere that white people could go,” he said. “I remember when I could clean downstairs at the movie theatre, but I couldn’t watch a movie downstairs. I think about where we have come from, and I am grateful to be here.”

GREENVILLE — It didn’t take long for the magistrates of Muhlenberg Fiscal Court to make a formal gesture for actions already taken in regard to the naming of the Muhlenberg Judicial Center.
After reading and approval of the minutes from Dec. 14 and Jan. 1 meetings, Magistrate Daniel Bowles made a motion to rescind the Dec. 14 unanimous vote to name the center after 13-year Muhlenberg Judge-Executive Rodney Kirtley at the court’s Jan. 11 meeting. Magistrate Tommy Watkins seconded it.

Humane Society imposes fees

The Muhlenberg County Humane Society is charging a $5 fee for each animal brought to the shelter.
According to a letter by director Kim Pennington, the charges result from the shelter’s “extreme financial hardship”, and there is no other option if the shelter is to stay open.
