Charles Augusta "Chalk" Hopkins, Sr.

    GREENVILLE – Charles Augusta "Chalk" Hopkins, Sr. left his earthly tabernacle to seek a higher reward Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007 after a brief illness.
    Born Sept. 27, 1934, he was the son of the late Abraham and Annie Mae Matthews Hopkins. He attended East Benham High School and after leaving there joined the United States Air Force where he was an active member for several years. Upon returning home from the Air Force, he married Mary Motley of Benham, Ky. and they had a child. Several years later he married Minnie Sanders and they had five children. While living in Cumberland, he accepted Christ and joined Cumberland First Baptist Church. He then proceeded to join a gospel group, "The Cumberland Five", and their motto was Lord Have Mercy. He and his family relocated to several states over the years to seek employment opportunities and he worked for a number of years with the International Harvester Company. He resided in Cleveland, Ohio for more than 40 years. Because of his illness, his last relocation took him to Greenville, so that his sister, Bettye, could care for him. He was preceded in death by a sister, Hattie Mae Harrell, a brother, Abraham Cleophus Hopkins and a son, Charles Augusta, Jr.
    Survivors include two sisters, Bettye L. (Edgar) Reynolds and Floretta (Steve) Lee-James; a brother, Donald Hopkins; five children, Charles Arthur (Karen), Joseph Alexander (China), Darlene Hawkins, Tonya Marie Huggins (Ronald), Cornelius Clay (Damita) and Theresa Marie; 24 grandchildren; and eight grandchildren.
    Funeral services were held at noon Feb. 7 at Tucker Funeral Home. Burial followed in West End Cemetery in Greenville.



Patsy A. Groves

    GREENVILLE – Patsy A. Groves, 69, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2007 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
    Born in Muhlenberg County July 23, 1937, she was a homemaker and a member of Freedom Baptist Church in Depoy. She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Groves.
    Survivors include her husband, James D. Groves; a son, Barry (Holly) Groves of Greenville; and four grandchildren, Macy Groves, Jacob Groves, Carson Groves and Landon Groves.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Feb. 1 at Freedom Baptist Church with the Revs. Tony Blake and Terry Groves officiating. Burial followed in Vernal Grove Cemetery in Depoy. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Peggy Sue Taylor Bivin

    BREMEN – Peggy Sue Taylor Bivin, 74, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2007.
    Born in Muhlenberg County Feb. 2, 1932, she was the former owner/operator of Bivin Furniture in Central City and a member of New Harmony Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith Bivin, a son, Duncan Claud Bivin, her father, Herbert Taylor and a brother, H.D. Taylor.
    Survivors include a son, David William Bivin of Penrod; two daughters, Ellen B. (Dooney) Spicer of Central City and Beth (Steve) Humphrey of Central City; five grandchildren, Monica (Chris) Dockery of Edwardsville, Ill., Alicia (Chris) Cain of Beechmont, Beau (Jessica) Bivin of Greenville, Jason (Dusti) Spicer of Central City and Taylor Humphrey of Bremen; six great-grandchildren, Dylan Cain, Hughston Cain and Zachery Cain, all of Beechmont and Grant Dockery, Harrison Dockery and Anderson Dockery, all of Edwardsville, Ill.; her mother, Helen Taylor of Central City; a sister, Donna Kimmel of Indianapolis, Ind.; a brother, Charles Taylor of LaPorte, Ind.; a sister-in-law, Luwana Taylor of Central City; and her special care-giver, Melody Young of Belton.
    Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Feb. 1 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Dan Yeager officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to New Harmony Church Building Fund, 8525 St. Rt. 181 N., Bremen, KY 42325.


Talitha Michelle Karstens

    SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Talitha Michelle Karstens, 36, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2007 at San Antonio Methodist Hospital.
    Born in Chicago, Ill. Dec. 20, 1970, she was a registered nurse at Ingenises Staffing and a member of Lone Star General Baptist Church in Greenville.
    Survivors include her father, Keith Karstens of San Antonio; her mother, Mary Goldston of Louisville; a brother, Joshua Karstens of Waldorf, Md.; a sister, Vanessa Karstens of Louiville; a niece; a nephew; and several aunts and uncles.
    Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Feb. 2 at Tucker Funeral Home. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CTRC, P.O. Box 1657, San Antonio, TX 78296-1657. Please note that donations are in memory of Talitha Karstens.


Gladys "Pat" Tucker Dempsy

    GREENVILLE – Gladys "Pat" Tucker Dempsy, 86, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2007 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
    Born in Greensboro, Ala. Feb. 4, 1920, she was a member of Green River Chapel General Baptist Church in Central City.
    Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Wells of Greenville; two sisters, Inez Rushing and Frances Owens, both of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Feb. 1 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Jewel Martin officiating. Burial followed in Fairmount Cemetery in Central City.


Christobel Grace McElwain

    BELTON – Christobel Grace McElwain, 88, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007 at her residence.
    Born in Muhlenberg County Oct. 28, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Weaver Winn and Clara B. Rust Winn. She was a homemaker and a member of Hortons Chapel Church of Christ.
    Survivors include her husband, Ernest McElwain; two daughters, Anita (Ray) Crafton and Linda (Loyd) Moore, both of Belton; three grandchildren, Kelly Crafton Henson of Belton, Melanie Moore of Nashville, Tenn. and Greg Moore of Madisonville; and a great-grandchild, Hunter Henson of Belton.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Feb. 2 at Price Funeral Home with the Revs. Kenneth Jones and Paul Moore officiating. Burial followed in Hortons Chapel Cemetery in Muhlenberg County.


James E. Daugherty

    SEBREE – James E. Daugherty, 78, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007 at his residence.
    Born in Central City Oct. 31, 1928, he was the son of the late John Ennis and Carrie Johnson Daugherty. He was retired from Kentucky Utilities Co. and was a member of the E.W. Turner Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by a brother, Millard Daugherty.
    Survivors include his wife, Alberta Whitaker Daugherty; a son, Earl Daugherty of Mortons Gap; two daughters, Brenda Piper of Greenville and Sue Elliott of Onton, Ky.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Feb. 3 at Tomblinson Funeral Home Sebree Chapel with the Rev. Bob Hardison officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony's Hospice.


Rondal Gene Level

    BREMEN – Rondal Gene Level, 66, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007 at Poplar Grove Nursing Home in Greenville.
    He was born in Muhlenberg County April 29, 1940.
    Survivors include three brothers, Sherman Level of Bremen, Larry Level of Mitchell, Ind. and John Thomas Level of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Feb. 3 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Kevin Brooks officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery in Bremen.


Wilma Jean Joines

    HENDERSON – Wilma Jean Joines, 74, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007 at Methodist Hospital.
    She was the daughter of the late Zelma and Mae Slaughter and was a member of The Church of Christ in Henderson. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ocus and Hollis Slaughter.
    Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Curtis J. Joines; a daughters, Denise Mitchell of Henderson; a sister, Junie Joines of Beechmont; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Jan. 26 at Tapp Funeral Home in Henderson with the Rev. Gary Puryear officiating. Burial followed in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.


Traycin Dayne Anderson

    BREMEN – Traycin Dayne Anderson, 8 days old, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007 at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.
    Born in Muhlenberg County Jan. 24, 2007, he was the son of Troy and Nikki Anderson of Bremen.
    Survivors include his parents; grandparents, Lewis and Teresa Case and Doug and Kay Anderson, all of Bremen and Jeff and Diana Williams of Owensboro; and great-grandparents, Jr. and Eyvone Rager of Bremen.
    Graveside services were held at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 5 at Bethlehem Cemetery in Bremen with the Rev. Nathan Bone officiating.


Nora Elizabeth Rickard

    SACRAMENTO – Nora Elizabeth Rickard, 88, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007 at Ridgewood Terrace Nursing Home in Madisonville.
    Born in McLean County Jan. 2, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Effrim and Lydia Ellis. She retired in 1981 as a nurse's aide at Daviess County Hospital and was a member of Towers Chapel Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arville Rickard in 1993, a son, Bobby Gene Rickard in 2002 and three brothers, Eckles Ellis, George Ellis and Herbert Ellis.
    Survivors include a son, Billy Rickard of Sacramento; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Feb. 5 at Tucker Memorial Chapel in Sacramento with the Rev. Gene Ellis officiating. Burial followed in Poplar Grove Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Poplar Grove Cemetery Fund, c/o Jerry Baggett, 5007 Pack Church Rd., Rumsey, KY 42371.


Buell Kennedy

    GREENVILLE – Buell Kennedy, 86, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2007 at Western Kentucky Veterans Center in Hanson.
    Born in Muhlenberg County Nov. 10, 1920, he was the son of the late Samuel and Ava Kennedy. He was a truck driver for Levinson Metal Co. in Greenville and was a United States Army veteran. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Kenneth Kennedy, Clarence Kennedy, Clyde Kennedy and Samuel Kennedy and three sisters, Gola Cash, Mary Farmer and Betty Peterson.
    Survivors include a son, Billy Kennedy of Greenville; a daughter, Jewell Dean Hardwick of Drakesboro; a brother, Ernest Kennedy of Kentucky; eight grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Feb. 5 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Henry Kelley officiating. Burial followed in Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Powderly.


Kendall M. Ross

    Kendall M. Ross, 80, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2007 at Owensboro Medical Health System in Owensboro.
    Born in Akron, Ohio, he was the son of the late Eck L. and Mary Casebier Ross. He was retired from Peabody Coal Company-Sinclair Surface Mine and was a member of United Mine Workers. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was a member of Centertown Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher for a number of years. He was preceded in death by a brother, Wallace Ross.
    Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Anna Rae Rowe Ross of Central City; a son, Jay V. Ross of Alpharetta, Ga.; a daughter, Joy Richey of Central City; a sister, Jaunita R. Reneer of New Haven, Conn.; and six grandchildren.
    Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Feb. 5 at Centertown Baptist Church with the Revs. Jeff Hawkins and Dan Yeager officiating. Burial followed in Centertown Cemetery. Bevil Bros. Funeral Home in Beaver Dam was in charge of arrangements. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Centertown Baptist Church.


Thelma Frances Hampton

    Thelma Frances Hampton, 57, died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2007 at Owensboro Medical Health System in Owensboro.
    Born in Muhlenberg County Aug. 29, 1949, she was the daughter of the late Johnny and Pearl Woods. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Rachel Gardner and a sister, Betty O'Bannon.
    Survivors include two sons, Bobby Hampton, Jr. and T. J. Hampton, both of Central City; two daughters, Teresa Caton and Jennifer Hampton, both of Central City; two brothers, Bob Woods of Owensboro and Tommy Woods of Greenville; a sister, Shirley Warner of Greenville; and three grandchildren.
    Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Feb. 6 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Ted Everly officiating. Burial followed in Fairmount Cemetery in Central City.
