Animal shelter at risk of closing By RITA DUKES
Leader-News Editor GREENVILLE — If the Muhlenberg Humane Society doesn’t receive a financial reprieve, shelter operations likely will be terminated within a month. That was the brunt of the message Humane Society Board members John King and Monte Denny brought to the Muhlenberg County Fiscal Court meeting March 8. Bob Lawton using experience for ‘Heroes’ • Lawton began Red Cross service with 1937 Great Flood By SAMANTHA CARVER Leader-News Staff Writer reporter@ky-leadernews.com As a committee member of the Mid-West Kentucky Chapter of the American Red Cross Heroes campaign, Bob Lawton hopes he is helping the community. However, helping the Red Cross is something that began for him 70 years ago during the Great Flood of 1937. “My parents, J. Bryant and Janie C. Lawton, were very active in the Red Cross here in Muhlenberg County,” he said. “When the flood came, they helped set up an emergency relief office in the upstairs of the (current) Lawton Insurance building. I was 17 at the time, and my job was to help haul large bags of food stuffs upstairs. Local merchants were making donations, and we were storing everything there to be delivered.” ![]() Bob Lawton ‘Springing to life’ ![]() Samantha Baxter, 2, daughter of Sam and Tina Baxter of Central City, enjoys the warm Monday afternoon at Central Park.
