• Seven Democrats; three Republicans vie for party nominations in May 22 primary election

    PADUCAH -- The Carson Four Rivers Center in Paducah provided the backdrop for the “show of shows” of gubernatorial candidates April 19. Six Democratic candidates and three Republican contenders fielded questions and talked about their visions for the next Kentucky governor.
    The Democratic candidates took center stage first with Speaker of the House Jody Richards, D-Bowling Green, saying that western Kentucky has been neglected in its share of state funding while former state Commerce Secretary Bruce Lunsford, D-Louisville, called western Kentucky the stepchild of Frankfort.


 


Rosen pleads guilty in animal cruelty case in District Court

    BELTON — The Muhlenberg surgeon charged with animal cruelty after 54 animals were confiscated from his Belton home, has pleaded guilty during a pretrial hearing in Muhlenberg District Court.
    Dr. Carl Rosen, a local urologist, was fined $1,000 and must pay  $7,000 in restitution for veterinary care for the animals taken into custody by the Muhlenberg Humane Society on April 3 and April 4.



MNHS teacher’s case continued

    A Muhlenberg North High School teacher remains on paid suspension after his domestic violence case was continued in Muhlenberg District Court Monday morning.
    Matthew W. Oates, 32, of Greenville was charged with assault fourth-degree domestic violence and lodged in the Muhlenberg County Jail in the early morning of April 9.


MNHS softball asst. coach relieved of duty

    A Muhlenberg North High School assistant softball coach has been relieved of responsibilities for the remainder of the year after a request from the principal to the district superintendent.
    Brooke Gunn, MNHS assistant softball coach, was removed after a request by Principal Mark Eades. She is also a special education teacher at Muhlenberg South Elementary School, but her teaching position was not effected.




Yonts remains in jail

    The son of a local state Representative will remain in jail while the appeal of a murder charge is reviewed, a judge ruled Feb. 20.
    Harrison Yonts, the son of Rep. Brent Yonts, had requested to be released from jail while his conviction of wanton murder is reviewed by the Kentucky Supreme Court. However, Judge Dennis Foust ruled he will remain in jail while awaiting the appeal.


Veteran MNHS music director Allen retiring

    After more than 31 years of service in Muhlenberg County, a musical icon is retiring.
    Joe Allen, band director at Muhlenberg North High School, will direct his final concert May 5, but even when those notes are silenced, his influence will still be felt in the lives of many former students.
