Central City passes tax on restaurants

    A 3 percent tax on all Central City restaurants received final approval from the city council May 16.
    The tax, which is to be used in the construction of a wellness center to be attached to the former Central City High School gymnasium, has been called a transient tax for the restaurants.


MSHS football coach suspended after DUI

    A Muhlenberg South High School football coach and social studies teacher was suspended from coaching for the remainder of the fiscal year following a guilty plea May 9 for driving under the influence.
    Matthew James Mueller, MSHS head football coach, received a $643 fine and had his driver's license suspended for 30 days after appearing in Muhlenberg County District Court.

Former Humane Society chair indicted for misappropriations

    The former chairman of the Muhlenberg County Humane Society board of directors has been indicted after financial discrepancies were discovered in the shelter's bank statements.
    Scott Risley, who served as the chairman for less than a year, is scheduled for a pretrial hearing May 29, according to his attorney Steve Lamb. He is charged with multiple counts of theft by unlawful taking over $300. Each charge is a Class D felony and carries a sentence of one to five years. He is also charged with theft by failure to make required disposition.


Sheriff's Office seizes guns, drugs, cash



The Muhlenberg County Sheriff's Office made its largest confiscation of firearms and cash during a drug bust in Greenville early Sunday morning. Above, Sheriff Eddie Perry, deputies Tommy Nantz, Terry Nunley and Jamie Jenkins display the 13 handguns, 15 rifles and 47 knives confiscated after executing a search warrant at the residence of Tony Ridley, 44, at 329 Jones Lane. Also confiscated was $12,858 in cash and $124.80 in change. Suspected drugs seized included five grams of methamphetamine, two ounces of liquid morphine, assorted morphine pills and other drug paraphernalia. Ridley was charged with trafficking in a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, possession of police radios, tampering with physical evidence and possession of a controlled substance.
