‘Barber shop duet’

GREENVILLE — With skyrocketing gas prices at the local pumps, using waste vegetable oil as fuel sounds like a good idea. While the concept isn’t wholly practical for everyone yet, Jake Hildebrandt used his “tinkering talents” to explore the possibilities of alternative fuel usage.
Hildebrandt, 31, installed a bi-fuel system on his 1996 GMC diesel pickup truck and recently gave it a test run on a two-hour trek to Murray. While the truck’s diesel system remains intact, he can switch over to vegetable oil once the diesel engine becomes hot enough.

Jake Hildebrandt checks the vegetable oil tank on his converted 1996 GMC diesel truck at his home in Greenville as wife, Andrea and sons, Dillon and Austin, watch.

Hildebrandt shows some of the parts used to allow him to convert from diesel fuel to vegetable oil while driving his truck. (Leader-News Photos/Rita Dukes)
