Sudden storm causes damage in Weir

Although opinions differ on the cause, strong weather caused serious damage throughout the community of Weir early Monday evening.
Whether it was straight line winds or a tornado, eyewitnesses and emergency officials disagree. But the severe weather that came through about 4 p.m. on Kentucky 171 brought with it damaging winds strong enough to bend flagpoles to the ground, pull trees out by the roots and even rip the steeple from Lead Hill United Methodist Church.

Keon King of Weir looks over the side of the swimming pool in his backyard after a tree fell into it during a severe storm Monday afternoon. Eyewitnesses saw a funnel cloud touch down across the street from the home in the field behind Lead Hill United Methodist Church. However, emergency officials will only confirm straight line winds. The Kings said nearly 18,000 gallons of water were in their pool and the majority of it spilled into their neighbor’s backyard when the tree crushed the pool’s frame.     GRAHAM — “Oh, those daring young men in their flying machines!”
While man’s desire to break the bonds of gravity and soar through the skies on various contraptions is nothing new, it’s become a new adventure for a local team to compete with theirs in the upcoming Red Bull Flugtag.
Flugtag is German for “flying day”, sponsored by the Red Bull drink company during two competitions around the U.S. each year. This year, there’s one in Nashville, Tenn., the first to be held in this part of the nation.

Rocky Top Rocket Flugtag team members Brad Moore, Brody Vincent, Luke Simmons, Brandon Vincent and Blake Vincent are nearly finished with their  human-powered project expected to be propelled into the air during the Red Bull Flugtag airshow June 23 at Nashville’s Riverfront Park over the Cumberland River. The show begins at 11 a.m.

Top, Brody Vincent does some finish  work on the team’s “flying banjo”. Next , Brandon Vincent contemplates his flight Saturday in hopes of garnering an award. The local Flugtag team was one of 30 out of 300 chosen to compete.

The Rocky Top Rocket has been constructed at Vincent’s Auto Solutions in Graham over the past two months. For more information on the event, go to www.redbullflugtagusa.com. (Leader-News Photos/Paul Moore)
