Mildred Majors

    GRAHAM – Mildred Majors, 85, died Sunday, June 17, 2007 at Owensboro Medical Health System in Owensboro.
    Born in Muhlenberg County April 29, 1922, she retired after 21 years with Regional Medical Center in Madisonville and 10  years with Muhlenberg Community Hospital. She was a member of Graham Missionary Baptist Church.
    Survivors include a daughter, Rhonda (Burke) McClure of Graham; and a granddaughter, Rebecca McClure of Graham.
    Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. June 20 at Unity Cemetery with the Rev. Carl Sparks officiating. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.




Dorothy Mary Barber

    DRAKESBORO – Dorothy Mary Barber, 85, died Saturday, June 16 at her residence.
    Born in Todd County June 19, 1921, she was a homemaker and a member of Richardson Chapel General Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, G. W. Barber; three sons, Gary Wayne, Rickie and Gibbie; a daughter, Sandra Smith; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
    Survivors include two sons, Raymond Barber and Wallace Lee Barber, both of Drakesboro; five daughters, Paulette Miller of Browder, Donna Williams of Central City, Carolyn Nole of Sebree, Rita Gish of Bremen and Mary Ford of Drakesboro; 24 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; a sister, Pauline Dodd of Milano, Tex.; a step-brother, Vernon Richardson of Drakesboro; and a half-brother, Tommy Dukes of Drakesboro.
    Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. June 19 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Revs. T. H. Davis and Jimmy Moore officiating. Burial followed in Peanut Cemetery in Drakesboro.


Melrow Thomas Wells

    LEWISBURG – Melrow Thomas Wells, 71, died Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at Owensboro Medical Health Systems in Owensboro.
    Born in Todd County Aug. 26, 1935, he was a farmer and worked at Thomas Industries. He was a member of New Harmony General Baptist Church in Todd County.
    Survivors include his wife, Barbara Chandler Wells; a son, Thomas Wells of Lewisburg; a daughter, Melinda Howard of Lewisburg; his mother, Maltie Wells of Lewisburg; five brothers, Eugene Wells, Robert Wells and Clarence Wells, all of Lewisburg,  James Alan Wells of Huntsville, Ala. and Johnny Wells of Murray; and four sisters, Louise Cornelius of Russellville, Mildred Arnold, Della Mae Jones and Mary McPherson, all of Lewisburg.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. June 21 at New Harmony General Baptist Church with the Revs. Tony Evitts and Donald McGhee officiating. Burial followed in Carneal Cemetery in Logan County. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Robert William "Bob" Sumner, Sr.

    BREMEN – Robert William "Bob" Sumner, Sr., 59, died Monday, June 18, 2007 at his residence.
    Born in Muhlenberg County Nov. 18, 1947, he was a welder for Brock Candy Company. He was a Navy veteran and of the Baptist faith.
    Survivors include two sons, Robert William Sumner, Jr. of Greenville and Michael Christopher Sumner of Bremen; a daughter, Lisa Marie (Phillip) Borboa of Centertown; three grandchildren, Britany, Alexandria and Abigale; his mother and step-father, Wanda (Stoy) Butler of Utica; two brothers, Layton Sumner and Michael Eugene Sumner, both of Central City; two sisters, Patricia Duarte of Hartford and Brenda Berry of Owensboro; his best friend, Billy Lacefield of Madisonville; an uncle, Jack Galbreath of Corydon, Ind.; and three aunts, Mary Russell of Booneville, Ruth Morrow of Madisonville and Jean Heltsley of Bremen.
    Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. June 21 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Donnie Wilkins officiating. Burial followed in Nelson Creek Cemetery in Nelson Creek.


L.E. Harrison

    L.E. Harrison, 67, of Central City, died Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.
    Born in Muhlenberg County Feb. 22, 1940, he was an equipment operator and of the Holiness faith.
    Survivors include two sons, Timothy Harrison of Greenville and Anthony Harrison of Central City; four daughters, Carolyn Phelps of Morgantown, Dorcas Evans of Hillsboro, Ohio, Katrena Thomason of Drakesboro and Amanda Mefford of Central City; 17 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth Harrison of Belton; and a sister, Eva Harrison of Greenville.
    Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. June 22 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Brad Rickard officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.


Sidney Thomas Bishop

    Sidney Thomas Bishop, 45, of Central City, died Saturday, June 16, 2007 at the V.A. Hospital in Houston, Tex.
    Born in Muhlenberg County Sept. 5, 1961, he was a veteran.
    Survivors include a son, Dustin Thomas Bishop of Ft. Benning, Ga.; a daughter, Stormy Bishop of Bremen; his mother, Louise Keeling of Central City; two brothers, Ronald Bishop of Greenville, Ind. and Charles Bishop of Gaines, S.C.; and two sisters, Marsha Tracy and Brenda Hanson, both of Florida.
    Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. June 23 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Whitehouse officiating. Burial followed in Brushey Fork Cemetery in McLean County.


Gladys Marie Sweeney

    ELKTON – Gladys Marie Sweeney, 95, died Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at her residence following a lengthy illness.
    Born in Muhlenberg County Sept. 26, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Frank Jamison and Betty Rice Jamison. She was a devout Christian starting at an early age, loved serving the Lord and was a member of Landmark Assembly of God Church. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening and canning. In later years, she had many travels with her sister-in-law, Mildred Sweeney, including a trip to the Holy Land. She always had a kind work for people she met and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
    Survivors include three sons, Darriel (Elizabeth) Sweeney of Elkton, and Leon (Angelin) Sweeney and Vondall (Daphane) Sweeney, both of Greenville; four daughters, Edna Day of Fletcher, N.C., and Diann (Charles) Graham, Karen (Ken) Dukes and Sharon (Wyatt) Oates, all of Greenville; 16 grandchildren, Roger (Trudie) Wells, Mike Jolly, David (Teresa) Edmisson, Dr. Tommy (Charme) Millard, Terri Millard, Darren Sweeney, Shawn Sweeney, Bobby Sweeney, Michele (Randy) Coleman, Jeremy Sweeney, Shaun Logsdon, Marinda Gates, Tony (Wendy) Dukes, Monica (Wade) Pride, Matthew (Jamie) Oates and Mark (Kirsten) Oates; 26 great-grandchildren; and two nieces.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. June 23 at Gary's Funeral Home with the Rev. Autry Moore officiating. Burial followed in Joines Chapel Cemetery in Clifty.


Thomas M. Hancock

    WEST CHESTER, OHIO – Thomas M. Hancock, 82, died Monday, June 18, 2007.
    Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth "Pat" Fortner Hancock; a son, Gregg Hancock; two daughters, Beth Crist and Marti Ferguson; three grandchildren; and three brothers, Turnor Hancock, Don Hancock and Fred Hancock.
    Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. June 22 at Lockland Christian Church, Mill & Patterson Rd. Burial followed in Fairmound Cemetery in West Elkton, Ohio. Memorials may be sent to Lockland Christian Church. Vorhis & Ryan Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Genevieve Baxter Geary

    Genevieve Baxter Geary, 82, of Central City, died Friday, June 22, 2007 at Maple Manor Healthcare in Greenville.
    Born in Muhlenberg County Dec. 7, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Robert Thomas "Tom" and Lucy Francis Nalley Baxter. She was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Estil Geary; a grandson, William Maurice "Billy" Guy; a sister, Julia Elizabeth Baxter; and a brother, James Farrah "Pete" Baxter.
    Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Elaine (Charlie K.) Guy of Powderly; a granddaughter, Cheryl Ann (    Michael Shane) Pendley of Willisburg, Ky.; three great-grandchildren, William Hunter Pendley, Michaela Ann Pendley and Nathaniel Shane Pendley, all of Willisburg; and two brothers, R.T. Baxter, Jr. of Central City and William Edward "Bill" Baxter of Bremen.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. June 24 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Curtis McGehee officiating. Burial followed in Fairmount Cemetery in Central City.


Bobby Hayden Duncan

    Bobby Hayden Duncan, 42, of Central City, died Friday, June 22, 2007 at Owensboro Medical Health System in Owensboro.
    Born in Muhlenberg County Aug. 1, 1964, he was a back hoe operator. He was preceded in death by his father, Freddie Duncan.
    Survivors include his wife, Dana Duncan of Owensboro; his parents, Darrell and Della Garrett of Central City; a daughter, Bobbie Nicole Duncan of Hopkinsville; three step-daughters, Elise, Rachael and Allison, all of Owensboro; a brother, George Duncan of Princeton, Ind.; and four sisters, Velma Wilcox and Vickie Waddell, both of Bremen, Lesa Mason of Central City and Christine Shemwell of Drakesboro.
    Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. June 25 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. James Mason officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.


Alma D. Jenkins

    Alma D. Jenkins, 90, of Central City, died Sunday, June 24, 2007 at her residence.
    Born in Williamsburg, Ky. July 20, 1916, she retired from Central City Elementary School as a school teacher and was of the Baptist faith.
    Survivors include two nieces.
    Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. June 27 at Fairmount Cemetery in Central City. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Leland "Blackie" Alverson

    POWDERLY – Leland "Blackie" Alverson, 75, died suddenly Sunday, June 24, 2007 at his residence.
    Born in Muhlenberg County Aug. 16, 1931, he was the son of the late Willie Kerr Alverson and Martha Alice Josey Alverson. He was a building contractor for many years for London Construction Company, Harbour Construction Company and S. A. Groves Company. He was a United States Army veteran, serving from 1951-1953 with the 6th Armour Division and he was a Kentucky Colonel.
    Survivors include his wife, Martha Muriel Hatfield Alverson; four sons, Randal Wade Alverson, Keith Lamar Alverson and Leland Ray Alverson II, all of Powderly, and Leslie Wyatt Alverson of Owensboro; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Virginia Henry of Owensboro; and two brothers, W.K. Alverson, Jr. of Greenville and Eugene Alverson of South Carrollton.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. June 27 at Gary's Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeremy Hatfield officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville.
