Controversy stirs over naming of Judicial Center

GREENVILLE — William Shakespeare wrote: “What is in a name? That which we call a rose by any other word would smell as sweet.”
Yet the recent naming of the Muhlenberg County Judicial Center for the former Muhlenberg Judge-Executive left a stench in some people’s nostrils.
After Magistrates Harold Wester, David James, Tommy Watkins, Phil O’Neal and Daniel Bowles voted unanimously to name the building for Rodney Kirtley at the Dec. 14 meeting, the lettering bearing Kirtley’s name was placed above the entrance to the building.

A Deason Signs employee removes the lettering above the entrance to the Muhlenberg Judicial Center around 3:45 p.m. Jan. 3 just a few days after it was placed there. Controversy surrounding the naming of the building after former Judge-Executive Rodney Kirtley is likely to be a focus of the Muhlenberg Fiscal Court’s next meeting at 3 p.m. Jan. 11.     A less invasive, more rapid biopsy for breast cancer is being offered at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
The stereotactic or X-ray guided biopsy allows a radiologist to examine a mass, a cluster of calcium deposits or an area of abnormal tissue change where no lump can be felt.

Former jailer dies one week after retiring

Although former Muhlenberg County jailer Willie Justice Jr. was looking forward to spending his retirement away from the jailhouse, he never got the chance.
Justice, 61, died at 7:45 a.m. Jan. 7 at Owensboro Mercy Health System.
After serving as jailer for 13 years, Justice decided not to run for re-election in 2006, and he retired Dec. 31. He was present for the swearing in ceremony of the newly elected county officials Jan. 1, but soon became ill and was admitted to the hospital.
