James Henry Hornsby

    POWDERLY – James Henry Hornsby, 68, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007 at Owensboro Medical Health System in Owensboro after a sudden illness.
    Born in Newport News, Va. Feb. 7, 1938, he was the son of the late Percy James Hornsby and Amy Bell Quisenberry Hornsby. He retired from the Greenville Utilities Commission as a water plant operator after 30 years. He was a United States Army veteran, having served in Vietnam and was a member of Willow Glen Church of Christ in Powderly. He was preceded in death by a sister, Josephine Burden and two brothers, Elmer Hornsby and Leslie Hornsby.
    Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Mary Anna Sasade Hornsby; a son, James Stephen Hornsby of Masonville; three daughters, Carolyn Ann Boyd of Owensboro, Shelia Jean Crouch of Greenville and Patricia Gail Forshee of Central City; and five grandchildren.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Jan. 16 at Gary’s Funeral Home with Jimmy Jenkins officiating. Private burial was held at Memorial Garden Cemetery.



Vandelia “Deedie” Meadors

    NASHVILLE – Vandelia “Deedie” Meadors, 102, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2007 at Floyd Medical Center in Rome, Ga.
    Born in Bremen Nov. 3, 1904, she was the daughter of the late Ellis Haywood Brown and Frizzel Kirkpatrick Brown. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Paris, Tenn. and attended Tusculum Baptist Church in Nashville. She was a former bookkeeper and school teacher. She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Meadors, a sister, Frances Brown and two brothers, Haywood Brown and Gregson Brown.
    Survivors include two nieces, Joy Capps of Nashville and Deedie Marie Kennedy of Orange Park, Fla.; two nephews, Donald O’Guin and Wayne Tarpley, both of Nashville; and three cousins, Judy LaFlare of Drakesboro, Ed Brown of Bardstown and John Gregson Brown of Mt. Vernon, Ill.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Jan. 18 at LeDon Chapel of Ridgeway Funeral Home in Paris, Tenn. with Dr. Johnny Duke officiating. Burial followed in Poplar Grove Cemetery in Springville, Tenn.


Gerald Bennett Woodson

    BEECHMONT – Gerald Bennett Woodson, 64, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
    Born in Muhlenberg County Oct. 10, 1942, he was a retired coal miner and a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church. He was a gentleman who was loved and respected by all and his life revolved around his family. He was a 25-year member of Hazel Creek Masonic Lodge #842, where Jon is a 15-year member and Scott and Leslie are newly inducted members.
    Survivors include his wife, Adelia Woodson; three sons, Jon Albert (Stephanie) Woodson of Greenville and Gerald Scott (fiance Shawn Davis) Woodson and Leslie Bryant Woodson, both of Beechmont; two sisters, Freida (Shirley) Wagoner of Williamtown and Theda (Royce) Morgan of Beechmont; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy (Bill) Carver and Nora (Sonny) Stewart, both of Greenville; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
    Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Jan. 19 at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Hazel Creek Masonic Lodge #842.


Raymond Holbert Durham

    GREENVILLE – Raymond Holbert Durham, 85, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
    Born in Muhlenberg County May 21, 1921, he was employed with International Harvester of Louisville. He was a United States Army veteran and a member of Martwick Missionary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Larry Ray Durham.
    Survivors include his wife, Lola Durham; a daughter, Sharon Kaye (Marshall) Stewart of Hopkinsville; two grandchildren, Alissa (Brad) Watson and Willis Raymond Pippin; two great-grandchildren, Lola Kaye Watson and Bryson Christopher Watson; a brother, William Lee Durham of Louisville; and a sister, Lorene Bilbrey of Russellville.
    Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Jan. 20 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Allen Black officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.


Bobby Gene Garrett

    EVANSVILLE – Bobby Gene Garrett, 73, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007 at his residence.
    He was the son of the late Oscar and Gladys Harper Garrett. He retired from Whirlpool Corporation in 1994 after 42 years of service. He was a United States Army veteran and was a member of Living Word Fellowship Church, where he operated the sound system. He was a lifetime member of FGBMFI. He was preceded in death by a sister, Glenda Garrett and three brothers, Doug, Lee and Billy Garrett.
    Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Hilda Meeks Garrett; three daughters, Lisa (David) Beyes of Mo., and Kim Garrett and Andrea Wirth, both of Evansville; an adopted daughter, Roberta (Alfred) Couch of Hanson; two sisters, Anna Toomey of Drakesboro and Cletta Richardson of Drakesboro; two sisters-in-law, Sue Garrett and Ann Garrett, both of Drakesboro; two brothers, Dale (Mary) Garrett of Williamsburg and Donnie (Sandy) Garrett of Central City; two grandchildren, Isaac Couch and Candy Jones; and several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Jan. 20 at Browning Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene and Rosemary Loyd officiating. Burial followed in Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Living Word Fellowship Church for a new PA system, 1051 E. Riverside Drive, Evansville, IN 47714.


William Lewis Bennett

    OWENSBORO – William Lewis Bennett, 75, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007 at Owensboro Medical Health System in Owensboro after a lengthy illness.
    Born in Greenville Sept. 10, 1931, he was the son of the late Morille J. Bennett and Sarah Beatrice Lewis Bennett. He graduated from Greenville High School in 1949 and earned a B.A. in 1953 and a M.A. in 1964 from Western Kentucky University. He served as a commissioned officer in the United States Army from 1953-1958 and taught school at Drakesboro and Hughes-Kirk schools. He retired after 19 years with the Commonwealth of Kentucky’s Department of Probation and Parole.
    Survivors include a son, William L. Bennett of Hancock County.
    Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Jan. 18 at Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville with the Rev. John Phelps officiating. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
   
Irene Humphrey

    Irene Humphrey, 84, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville. Heaven was kissed by an angel when the Lord called Irene home.
    Born in Martwick Sept. 22, 1922, she was a homemaker and a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church in Central City. She enjoyed spending time with her family and talking on the telephone. She was such a giving person and a friend to everyone she met.
    Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Hershel Humphrey; a daughter, Janice (Jr.) Reno of Central City; two sons, Roger (Edwina) Humphrey of Central City and Jerry (Linda) Humphrey of Greenville; two sisters, Gladys Whitaker of Smyrna, Del. and Eva Craig of Sacramento; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Jan. 19 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Ernest Bean officiating. Burial followed in Memorial Gardens in Powderly.


Rev. Leslie Earl Williams

    LEWISBURG – The Rev. Leslie Earl Williams, 91, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007 at Logan Memorial Hospital in Russellville.
    Born in Logan County Aug. 1, 1915, he was the son of the late John Calvin Williams and Rosie Coursey Williams. He was a retired Baptist minister of 45 years, serving several churches in Logan, Todd, Muhlenberg and Christian counties. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith G. Wilson Williams, a daughter, Dorothy Jean Williams and a son, Billy Joe Williams.
    Survivors include two sons, Calvin Morris Williams of Sharon Grove and James Earl Williams of Lewisburg; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Jan. 20 at Antioch Baptist Church with the Revs. J.R. Craig, Brian Jones, Tommy Willhite and Larry Vincent officiating. Burial followed in Elk Lick Baptist Church Cemetery in Logan County. Price Funeral Home in Lewisburg was in charge of arrangements.


David Brentin DeArmond, Sr.

    PENROD – David Brentin DeArmond, Sr., 69, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
    Born in Muhlenberg County Jan. 6, 1938, he was a carpenter.
    Survivors include six sons, David Brentin DeArmond, Jr. and Charles DeArmond, both of Penrod, Timothy DeArmond of Bremen, Mark DeArmond and Aaron DeArmond, both of Franklin and Terry DeArmond of Bowling Green; a daughter, Dana Goodsell of Powderly; two brothers, Austin DeArmond and Adrian DeArmond, both of Indiana; five sisters, Nina Young, Luida Padgett, Judy Grayson and Janie Boggart, all of Louisville and Evelyn Hunt of Penrod; 22 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Jan. 20 at Tucker Funeral Home with Larry Jenkins officiating. Burial followed in Hughes Cemetery in Dunmor.


Maymie Ree Decker

    Maymie Ree Decker, 85, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007 at Methodist Hospital in Henderson.
    Born in Ohio County Feb. 3, 1921, she was a homemaker and a member of Haven Pentecostal in Henderson. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Decker and a son, Wendell Decker.
    Survivors include a son, William E. Decker, Jr. of Greenville; three daughters, Ruby Uzzle of Henderson, Joyce Brown of Central City and Helen Murphy of Madisonville; two sisters, Viola Everett of Hartford of Dorothy Geary of Louisville; eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
    Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Jan. 20 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Willard Clement officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.


Larry D. Beasley

    BELTON – Larry D. Beasley, 55, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007 at his residence.
    Born in Muhlenberg County Nov. 12, 1951, he was a coal miner and of the Baptist faith.
    Survivors include a son, Chris Beasley of Belton; a daughter, Tammy McElvain of Drakesboro; his mother, Golden Woodall of Belton; his grandmother, Mary H. Pendley of Belton; and two grandchildren.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Jan. 20 at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home with the Rev. Brian Haire officiating. Burial followed in Mud River Union General Baptist Church Cemetery in Belton.


Agnes Marie Rodakis

    DRAKESBORO – Agnes Marie Rodakis, 71, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007 at Owensboro Medical Health System in Owensboro.
    Born in Muhlenberg County Sept. 9, 1935, she was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Central City.
    Survivors include two sons, Raymond Byrd of Drakesboro and Robert Byrd of Tennessee; three daughters, Roberta Sherman of California, Linda Workman of Florida and Debra Meece of Greenville; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother; two sisters; and several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Jan. 21 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Ben Luther officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Butler County. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Geronima Vaglica

    GREENVILLE – Geronima Vaglica, 84, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007 at her residence after a short illness.
    Born in Chicago, Ill. Aug. 28, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Michael Badagliacco and Helen Aiello Badagliacco. She was a factory worker for 33 years and was of the Catholic faith. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Pete LoRusso, her second husband, John T. Vaglica and a daughter, Marie LoRusso.
    Survivors include three sons, Angelo LoRusso of Greenville, Frank LoRusso of Chicago and Michael Joven of Kankakee, Ill.; a daughter, Mary T. LoRusso of Chicago; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Jack Badagliacco of Chicago, Santo Badagliacco of Texas and Salvador DePaul of Dalton, Ill.
    Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Jan. 23 at Green Funeral Home in Chicago. Burial followed in Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Brookfield, Ill. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.


Margaret Groves

    GRAHAM – Margaret Groves, 77, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville after a short illness.
    Born in Muhlenberg County Aug. 27, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Hosey Columbus Tyson and Betty Mae Brown Tyson. She was a homemaker and was of the Holiness faith. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, James Alvie “Granny” Groves in 2003.
    Survivors include two sons, Jimmy (Brenda) Groves of Elkwood, Va. and Johnny (Brenda) Groves of Graham; two daughters, Judy Pike of Graham and Bonnie (Roy) Gibson of Greenville; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
    Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Jan. 23 at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Revs. Terry Groves and Curtis McGehee officiating. Burial followed in Graham Hill Cemetery in Graham.


Ruby Jewell Knight

    GREENVILLE – Ruby Jewell Knight, 73, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007 at her residence.
    Born in Muhlenberg County Dec. 11, 1933, she was a homemaker and a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Drakesboro. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Knight in 2003 and a sister, Patsy Hill.
    Survivors include a son, Ronnie Knight of Hampton, Tenn.; two daughters, Connie Pursley and Rita Strifler, both of Greenville; her mother, Thelma Benson of Greenville; three brothers, Donnie Benson, Buddy Benson and Wayne Benson, all of Greenville; four sisters, Dorothy Griffin of Frankfort, Ind., Shirley LeDuc and Brenda Benson, both of Greenville and June McGee of Central City; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
    Private funeral services were held at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.


Delis M. Brown

    GRAHAM – Delis M. Brown, 94, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2007 at Colonial Terrace Nursing Home in Sebree after several months illness.
    Born in Muhlenberg County Sept. 28, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Jack Morehead and Bertha Yates Morehead. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Brown in 1983, and three sons, Teddy Joe Brown in 1968, John Everett Brown in 1999 and Dorris Brown in 2002.
    Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Crabtree of Greenville; a son, Ronnie Brown of Graham; eight grandchildren; a special grandchild, Connie Hobgood of Robards; 16 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Jan. 21 at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Rev. T. H. Davis officiating. Burial followed in Corley Chapel Cemetery in Graham. Contributions can be made to St. Anthony’s Hospice, 1355 Highway 41A S., Dixon, KY 42409.


Howard Paul Robinson

    DRAKESBORO – Howard Paul Robinson, 75, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
    Born in Muhlenberg County Dec. 17, 1932, he was the son of the late Clarence and Florence Robinson. He worked maintenance with the Muhlenberg County Road Department and was a member of Union General Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by two brothers, C. R. and David Robinson and five sisters, Shirley Vincent, Christine McPherson, Jean Taylor, Ruth Taylor Williams and Becky Southerland.
    Survivors include two brothers, Tommy (Lynette) Robinson and Carlyle Robinson, both of Drakesboro; and several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Jan. 23 at Union Chapel General Baptist Church with the Rev. Kerry Vincent officiating. Burial followed in Union Chapel Cemetery. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Gladys Marie Silvy

    ELKTON – Gladys Marie Silvy, 81, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007 at her residence of natural causes.
    Born in Todd County April 13, 1925, she was the daughter of the late William and Ollie Mae Marshall Hurt. She was a farmer and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Lee Silvy in 1978 and a daughter, Carrie Monroe in 1999.
    Survivors include three sons, Albert Lee Silvy of Springfield, Tenn., Dorris Franklin Silvy and Robert Owen Silvy, both of Hopkinsville; five daughters, Helen Sawyer and Earline Silvy, both of Elkton, Thelma Rager and Wilma Gilkey, both of Central City and Ruth Morton or Russellville; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Jan. 23 at Latham Funeral Home in Elkton with the Rev. Jerry Sweeney officiating. Burial followed in Bethel Cemetery.


Patty Gregory

    Patty Gregory, 66, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2007 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
    Born in Muhlenberg County Jan. 13, 1941, she was a homemaker and a member of Temple Baptist Church in Central City.
    Survivors include her husband, Bobby Joe Gregory of Central City; a son, Brian (Tonya) Gregory of Elkton; a grandson, Derek Gregory of Elkton; her mother, Jewell Tunstill of Greenville; and a brother, Charles Tunstill of Beaver Dam.
    Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Jan. 24 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Kyle Noffsinger officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.


John Michael Capuria

    John Michael Capuria, 74, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2007 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
    Born in Pennsylvania March 18, 1932, he was retired from the United States Army and a member of Mercer Baptist Church in Powderly. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert.
    Survivors include his wife, Ann Teague Capuria of Central City; two sons, Matt Capuria and Wes Capuria, both of Central City; two daughters, Sue Capuria of Hopkinsville and Patricia Groves of Graham; and eight grandchildren.
    Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Jan. 24 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Curtis McGehee officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.


Nodell Lear Newman

    GREENVILLE – Nodell Lear Newman, 91, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007 at her residence after a short illness.
    Born in Rosewood June 12, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Ellis Zeno Dukes and Rosie Evitts Dukes. She was a homemaker and a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Greenville. She was preceded in death by her first husband of 39 years, Eura W. Lear Feb. 8, 1973.
    Survivors include her husband of 32 years, Boyce Newman; a step-son, Paul Newman of Greenville; and several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Jan. 24 at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Revs. Ernest Bean and Curtis Lear officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville.
